Choosing A Solar Panel

1) Solar Powered Ventilation Fans

Before understanding how to choose a solar panel, lets first understand what is Solar Panel.

Solar Panel – Solar Panel is an amazing invention to mankind after Eve ate the apple. Solar panel is robust, low maintenance powerful device having many number of Solar cells connected to each other, converting Solar energy into electricity. Solar Panels converts any type of Light into electricity, major use of Solar panels are for generation of power by using sunlight, as sunlight is freely available & abundant.

So how to choose a solar panel.

Solar panels depends on the type of cell used. Below are the types of Panels used for solar rooftop installation.

  • Polycrystalline Solar Panels
  • Monocrystalline Solar Panels
  • Monoperc Solar panels

Polycrystalline Solar Panels:

It is also known as Multicrystalline solar panels. As the name say’s poly means many. So many different silicons cells are melted together and Polycrystalline Solar panels are manufactured.

  • They have lower efficiencies compared to Monocrystalline.
  • Output Power wattage of 1 panels is less compared to same size.
  • Monocrystalline panel.
  • Efficiency range – 13-16%

Monocrystalline Solar Panels:

As the name say’s, Mono means single. So single silicon cell is melted into fragments and Monocrystalline panels are manufactured.

  • Higher efficiencies’
  • Higher power generation compared to polycrystalline.
  • Efficiency range – 17-20%

Monoperc Solar Panels:

The recent innovation is Solar Panels is Monoperc panels. The main advantage is the front surface absorb direct sunlight and the rear surface absorbs diffused sunlight.

  • Maximum efficiency.
  • Higher power generation in rainy season as well.
  • Efficiency range more than 22%
Polycrystalline Solar Panel Lowest efficiency Same system more number of Solar Panels
Monocrystalline Solar Panel Moderate efficiency Same system less number of panels
Monoperc Solar Panel Maximum efficiency Same system less number of panels

Example: (Practical data of 2 of our sites)

Two neighbors Suresh & Ramesh installed 10 KW Solar power system each. Suresh installed Polycrystalline solar panels while Ramesh installed Monoperc panels.

In year 2019, the annual solar power generation Suresh got was 12,500 units (Annually) while generation of solar power system was 13,600 units (Annually). So the difference of yearly power generation is 900 units. Considering 25 years warranty & life of solar panels, the approximately loss in power generation goes around 20,000 units. Approx power rate is 12/unit, the total loss due to less power generation is INR 2,40,000/-.

So its better to think on what type of Solar Panels you are choosing.

Monoperc panels are little costly as compared to Polycrystalline & Monocrystalline solar panels. But considering long life & higher power generation, they are reliable.

So before installing Solar Power plants focus on the type of Solar Panel you are using.
